But here in our today’s talk, What you and I want to see are the gas air compressors. Do they really worth it? and what about their electric counterparts. There are few a misunderstandings I want to eliminate for you…
The Truth: Gas Vs Electric Air Compressor Comparison
In this gas vs electric air compressor conundrum, it’s crystal clear both compressors carry out the tasks in a very efficient and affluent way. There are only a few differences that I’ll briefly highlight for you.
Gas Powered Air Compressors
- They are portable & maneuverable.
- Mainly used with big pneumatic & air tools.
- They are pricy due to their high specs & heavy-duty design.
- They are specially built for outside tough and heavy-duty jobs.
- Used in those Job sites that have no electrical hookup system.
- They run on a pilot unloader valve instead of the typical automatic stop/shutdown system. Thus, with gas, they can work continuously for longer durations.
Electric Air Compressors
- They are also portable & maneuverable.
- Mostly used with light-duty depending on the compressor’s own specs.
- These one’s prices vary depending upon the type and specs. Can be cheaper or expensive as well.
- These ones are common & come in a variety of light to heavy-duty work.
- They must require an extension cord for running. But, there are exceptions like cordless compressors.
- They run on the automatic stop/shutdown mechanism to avoid overload or overheating.
So, that is the main difference that I wanted to clear up between both gas vs electric air compressors. These differences elaborate the importance of these gas powered air compressors.
However, there are few downsides to these gas air compressors which you will find out in our best gas air compressor reviews. One step before you make any judgment to purchase any gas compressor is to go through and remember these crucial guidelines.

So, stay connected till the end…
Best Gas Air Compressor 2021 [Buying Guide]
Let’s begin our journey with the crucial factors associated with gas compressors. Although they are technical terms with technical details, we’ll simplify them for non-techy guys. You don’t need any engineering mumbo-jumbo dictionary to get them. Here we go …
CFM that is short for the Cubic Feet per Meter delivers the quantity of air in cubic feet to the air tool in one minute. It is a prime factor to consider whether your compressor is powered by electricity or gas.
The higher CFM rating provides a better running of the tools. It also enhances the ability to drive heavy tools and more than one tool at once.
PSI that is short for Pressure per Square Inch delivers the amount of pressure acting on an area of one meter. The tough jobs are PSI hungry, so they eat more PSI usually more than 100. For the junior tasks, 40 or 90 PSI can perform the job well.
The important thing you need to know is that you have to provide the pressure according to your tool capacity. Excess pressure supply can damage the air tool or result in its malfunctioning.
The tank is the reservoir of the gas or a gasholder. The tank capacity specifies how much content of the gas you retain at any time. With the larger container, you can have a greater amount of air for your pneumatic tools.
Also, it provides more backup for bigger tasks. You can keep doing the job without pauses for refilling. Yet, the larger size gallon also increases the overall cost of the product.
An interesting thing is that the tank size and portability have an inverse relationship with each other. It means that a larger tank size will reduce the portability factor. The smaller the footprint, the easier it is to carry the unit within the worksite or transport it to other job locations.
You might consider the tank capacity according to the nature of the job and on-budget capacity. Here are some of the examples; 20 Gallons, 30 Gallons, 60 Gallons, or finally the Beastly 80 Gallon Air Compressors.
Almost all gas-powered air compressors have the noise factor to some extent. Therefore, they are mostly used in outdoor jobs. Although their loudness level lies within an acceptable range some of you may have to compromise this factor.
Single or Two Stage
The number of stages determines how many times the piston of the pump compresses the air. Their double stage pumping will result in greater and better compression than the single stage.
Double stage compressors are efficient and deliver high CFM to the air tools. They are more versatile and can be used for more variety of tasks.
The single-stage buddies are the junior ones and are generally used in the smaller tasks where lower CFM is enough to run the tool.
But definitely, the single-stage compressors are more economical than the two-stage units. Cost or CFM, the choice is yours.
Oil vs Oil-Free
Oil vs oil-free air compressor, there are arguments for and against both of them. The tough jobs and durability demand a lubricated pump.
The oil-lubricated air compressors are machine-friendly as the oil works as a lifeline by reducing the friction between the mobile parts. They are mainly designed to work with heavy workloads and tools. That’s why they require regular maintenance and replenishment which are additional costs.
While the oil-free air compressors are customer-friendly in terms of no extra costs or cleaning. They are specifically used for light-duty jobs and tools. But they have a relatively lower life span and less wear and tear of the components.
Price and Warranty
The pricing factor may vary a lot on our product list. This is because we are primarily highlighting the pas-powered feature. While the variation in the price is mainly due to a larger tank and accordingly the engine and pump specs.
Warranty! A bonus for the customer! If there is a warranty package offered, one may compromise the higher cost. There will be ecstasy for you when the product is available at an economical cost with an attractive warranty.

My Personal Recommendation
Finally, if I have to see and compare all of them, then Industrial Air Contractor is the one I go with. The duty cycle is not 100%, I can understand that. Plus, the gas vs electric air compressor comparison also clears my mind about the importance of gas air compressors.
Now, as for others in the list. The NorthStar is best for service trucks. Hmmm! on that case I don’t have the service truck. So, I myself don’t go for it.
The DeWalt D55153 on the other hand is a unique case with a cheaper price. I think it’s best suited for budgeted DIYers, shop, or garage owners.
While the Ingersoll Rand hurts a DIYer & garage owner like me. Because of the high price tag. It’s best suited for serious shop owners who are “Mr. Money In The Bank”.
This same applies to the Quincy QT-54. Both of these are commercial-grade compressors built for heavy-duty tools and jobs.
Lastly, the Rolair GD4000PV5H, I was concerned about this one due to the lower rating. So, I can’t give you a final verdict on it. But, the thing I can say about it is best suited for small jobs although it’s a gas air compressor.
But, I am happy with the Industrial Air Contractor.
